Clio Practice Management System for Smaller Law Firms Available to New York State Bar Association Members

Albany, NY and Vancouver, BC – September 27, 2011  The New York State Bar Association has entered an Affinity Partnership that allows its members to subscribe to Clio, a web-based practice management system designed especially for solo practitioners and smaller law firms, at discounted rates.

For smaller firms, the costs of purchasing software, upgrading it periodically and hiring technology support staff can be challenging. Clio allows smaller firms to access a highly secure, sophisticated practice management system for an affordable monthly fee. Upgrades to Clio are automatically applied for users when they log in. Product support is included in the subscription cost.

Using bank-grade 256-bit SSL encryption for security, Clio is Internet- or “cloud-based,” making it accessible on PC or Mac computers, smart phones and tablets. As a result, attorneys can easily update their calendars and tasks, manage cases and documents, track trust and operating accounts, record their hours, and prepare customized bills.

“Clio provides our members with a cutting-edge technology to help them manage their law practices. Emerging technology like this can help smaller firms adapt to a changing professional environment,” said State Bar Association President Vincent E. Doyle III of Buffalo (Connors & Vilardo, LLP). “We are pleased to offer such a practical benefit to our members.”

The State Bar’s Report of the Task Force on the Future of the Legal Profession, released in April, recognized that new legal technology offers both challenges and opportunities to solo practitioners and small firms. The report recommended that the State Bar assist smaller firms with technology-related issues. It suggested the State Bar might develop services that benefit practitioners for whom individual investment in technological solutions is not economically feasible.

Jack Newton, president of Clio, said, “We are proud to announce that the New York State Bar Association is participating in the Clio Bar Affinity Program. Bar associations across North America are realizing that cloud-based technology is becoming integral to their members’ success, not only as legal professionals, but as business owners.”

State Bar members are eligible for a 10 percent ongoing discount on Clio, making the system available for $44 a month per attorney and $22 a month for each support staff person. Members can try Clio for free for 30 days.

The New York State Bar Association has Affinity Partnerships with a number of corporations, allowing members to qualify for discounted rates for technology, health insurance, credit cards and research services. For information about Clio and other member benefits, see NYSBA Member Benefits.

The 77,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.

Legal Cloud Computing Association Publishes Responses to ABA, North Carolina State Bar

Jul 19, 2011 – The Legal Cloud Computing Association (“LCCA”) has published its responses to proposals issued by the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20 (“Commission”) and the North Carolina State Bar (“NC State Bar”) regarding the use of cloud computing within a law practice.

The LCCA, formed in December 2010, is the collective voice of the leading cloud computing software providers for the legal profession, consisting of Clio (Themis Solutions, Inc.), DiaLawg, LLC, DirectLaw, Inc., NetDocuments, Nextpoint, Inc., RealPractice, Inc., Rocket Matter, LLC, and Total Attorneys, LLC.

Response to ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20

The LCCA’s letter to the ABA Commission on Ethics was issued in response to the Commission’sInitial Draft Proposals on “Technology and Confidentiality” published on May 2, 2011. The Proposals include certain modifications to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct that are designed to facilitate the responsible adoption of technology that will increase the quality, and reduce the cost, of legal services.  The Proposals were issued as part of a process initiated in early 2010 where the Commission published an Issues Paper requesting comments and feedback from the legal community.

The LCCA fully supports the Commission’s Proposals, and thanks the Commission for incorporating feedback from the LCCA and others on the Issues Paper.

Response to North Carolina State Bar Proposed 2011FEO6

The LCCA’s letter to the NC State Bar pertains to Proposed Formal Ethics Opinion (“FEO”) 2011FEO6. The Proposed FEO attempts to address the ethical issues relating to the use of Software-as-a-Service or cloud computing within a law firm environment.

While the LCCA supports the NC State Bar’s efforts to provide clarity on the use of cloud computing to its members, the Proposed FEO as written would negatively impact a broad scope of attorneys from those who do nothing more than use a web-based email client or conduct online legal research to those that do full scale online delivery of legal services.

The onerous requirements of the Proposed FEO, detailed in full in the LCCA’s response to the NC State Bar, would force many cloud computing providers to withdraw from the NC market entirely, thus negatively impacting the technological capabilities and competitiveness of NC-based law firms.

The LCCA thanks both the ABA and the North Carolina State Bar for the opportunity to provide feedback on their respective proposals. It is the LCCA’s hope that a constructive dialog among stakeholders will facilitate the rapid adoption of cloud computing technology within the legal profession, consistent with the highest standards of professionalism and ethical compliance.

Clio Strengthens Security of Cloud-Based Practice Management System with Two-Factor Authentication

LEGALTECH NEW YORK, NYC – January 31, 2011 – At LegalTech New York this week, Vancouver-based Themis Solutions Inc. is pleased to announce improved security for its leading cloud-based legal practice management system, Clio, with the introduction of two-factor authentication. Designed to offer attorneys and their clients an even greater level of security and privacy protection, two-factor authentication was developed as part of Clio’s commitment to be the most secure practice management system in the cloud.

Although the internet is a trusted medium for hosting critical applications and information, passwords are often a weak link in the chain of security between a web application and a user. Clio’s two-factor authentication option allows subscribers to require that passwords be used in conjunction with a secure PIN delivered to a mobile device or other secondary authentication mechanism. This means enhanced security for all users, and ensures that a weak or compromised password can’t be used alone to gain access to sensitive data.

Jack Newton, President of Clio, notes, “Security is a critical component of any cloud-based law practice management solution. At Clio, we continually strive to provide our customers with leading-edge tools and security, and two-factor authentication furthers our commitment to provide our users with the best data security and privacy protection in the market.” Newton continues, “In a world of many passwords, it’s easy for credentials to become familiar, repetitive and ultimately insecure. With two- factor authentication, sensitive firm information remains protected, even if a password becomes compromised.”

For more information on Clio and two-factor authentication security, visit: www.goclio.com.

Industry Leaders Join Together to Form Legal Cloud Computing Association

CHICAGO, IL – December 16, 2010 – Recognized leaders in legal cloud computingannounced today the formation of the Legal Cloud Computing Association (LCCA), an organization whose purpose is to facilitate the rapid adoption of cloud computing technology within the legal profession, consistent with the highest standards of professionalism and ethical compliance.

The organization’s goal is to promote standards for cloud computing that are responsive to the needs of the legal profession and to enable lawyers to become aware of the benefits of computing technology through the development and distribution of education and informational resources.

The LCCA also announced the publication of its response to the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20 Working Group with respect to the Commission’s September 10, 2010 call for comments on Client Confidentiality and the Use of Technology.

The group, consisting of Clio (Themis Solutions Inc.), DirectLaw, Inc., Rocket Matter, LLC and Total Attorneys, LLC, will cooperate with Bar Associations and other policy-forming bodies to release guidelines, standards, “best practices,” and educational resources relating to the use of cloud computing in the legal profession. An informational website for the group links to members and their response to the ABA Ethics questions.

“This is a promising development for the profession,” said lawyer Niki Black , author of the Sui Generis and Legal iPad blogs and author of the ABA’s upcoming book on cloud computing.” As technology evolves and continually provides us with better ways to manage our practices and serve our clients, it’s important that lawyers have workable – and practical – guidelines to follow on issues like security and ethical concerns. The formation of the LCCA is a step in the right direction. It opens up a dialogue between legal cloud computing providers and ensures that they’re on the same page on these issues.”

The LCCA’s response suggests the desired form for the Commission’s recommendations to be a set of technology standards for cloud computing providers, and a model terms of service for cloud computing providers. In addition, the LCCA offers practical insight on security and addresses the issue of whether cloud computing can be deemed a form of “outsourcing.”

The LCCA believes that the education of the legal profession is a primary objective to achieve as cloud computing continues to grow, and intends to take full advantage of the combined practical experience, knowledge and insight of all its members to accomplish that goal.

Announcing 35 New Clio Certified Consultants Including Brett Burney

Vancouver, BC – December 15, 2010 – Vancouver-based Themis Solutions Inc., provider of cloud-based legal practice management offering www.goclio.com, today announced that 35 new consultants have joined the Clio Certified Consultants Partner Program (see list below) including noted legal technology expert Brett Burney of Burney Consultants. Other Clio Certified Consultants include staff members at several bar associations, including the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin, the State Bar of Michigan, and the District of Columbia Bar.  The Clio Certified Consultants (CCC) Partner Program now has a membership of 67 consultants spanning 28 states, as well as several international markets.

Burney signed on as a CCC because “cloud computing provides the vital security, flexibility, accessibility and confidentiality that lawyers require for managing their practice and client information.  In my consulting practice, I support some lawyers who use Macs.  Traditionally, legal practice management software has been Windows-based, so there has been limited choice for Mac lawyers.  Clio is a superior practice management system that provides the security and confidentiality law firms need while allowing them to work either on PCs or Macs.”
