Acton Capital Partners Leads Investment Round to Accelerate Market-Leader’s Growth

NEW YORK, NY and VANCOUVER, BC – January 30, 2012 – Clio, the leader in cloud-based management tools for the legal industry, announced today at LegalTech New York that it has raised $6 million in its Series B round of financing. The funding was led by Acton Capital Partners, a Munich-based growth equity investor; existing investors, including Point Nine Capital, also participated in the round.

“The legal space is ripe for disruption,” said Boris Wertz, Acton’s Vancouver- based Venture Partner and a new member of Clio’s Board of Directors. “Although this industry has traditionally been regarded as slow to adopt technological changes, recent investments show it’s now ready to benefit from technological innovations like cloud computing. We believe that Clio can take advantage of this tremendous opportunity by implementing their vision of moving the legal industry to the cloud.”

According to the American Bar Association, more than 80 percent of the law firm market is made up of solo practitioners or small firms. “With few support staff and no IT departments, these professionals are often overwhelmed by the administrative side of their business,” said Clio Founder and CEO Jack Newton. “Clio is designed specifically for these lawyers. By moving their practice management to the cloud, we give these lawyers tools to manage their practices and build client relationships that are both more secure and more collaborative.”

Clio will use this new funding to extend its product leadership position, aggressively developing new functionalities and supporting its growing customer base. In addition, the company aims to expand its footprint beyond the U.S. (which currently represents 95% of Clio’s sales) into other markets including Europe, Canada and Australia.

“Clio has seen incredible growth since our launch nearly four years ago because legal professionals have recognized that, through the cloud, we can deliver unprecedented levels of mobility, security and efficiency to their practices,” said Newton. “We look forward to using this latest financing to deliver a broad range of exciting new features to our users while continuing to deliver the world-class support they have come to expect.”

Apple products are going strong and gaining ground with small firm lawyers at the expense of previously dominant legal technology players, such as Research in Motion.

Vancouver, BC – December 15, 2011 – The 2011 Clio Apple in Law Firms Survey results have been tabulated and 763 people participated, 80% of which were practicing lawyers and 20% of which were law students or non-lawyers. 76% of respondents were lawyers at firms with 10 attorneys or less. Many of the survey respondents were relative Mac newcomers: 25.3% of respondents had switched to Mac within the past year.

Co-sponsored by MILOfest, this year’s results show that Apple products are going strong and gaining ground with small firm lawyers at the expense of previously dominant legal technology players, such as Research in Motion.

Widely-used products in the survey included iPhones, used by 60.9% of respondents; Dropbox, used by 25% of respondents; iCloud, seeing high adoption at 15%; and Android phones with usage at 13%. Evernote, a note-taking app not included in last year’s survey, debuted at 14% usage. OpenOffice had gained 2 percentage points since last year, showing that open source technology is appealing to solo and small law firms. Clio showed a 22% adoption rate, more than double the 2010 adoption rate.

Why are lawyers continuing to “go Mac”? 46.5% of respondents said they chose Apple hardware over PC options because the technology was more reliable and secure. Usability was next on at 33.8%. Familiarity due to home use of Apple/Mac products was 9.8%, and surprisingly aesthetics and design came in fourth at only 3%.

76.5% of law students said that when they graduate, they plan on choosing a Mac platform for their office. This statistic shows that Mac has a bright future in legal, since the new generation graduating is heavily Apple-oriented.

“This is the second year Clio has conducted this Apple in Law Firms survey to benchmark the degree of adoption of Apple products and other emerging technology in the legal industry,” said Clio CEO and Co-Founder Jack Newton. “Apple hardware and devices – especially the iPad and iPhone – continue to capture the attention and dollars of lawyers, cloud-based applications have won attorneys’ confidence and gained more traction. With the majority of law students planning to use Mac apps in their law practices upon graduation, we can reasonably predict a longstanding trend toward continued expansion of Apple products within the legal industry.”

All legal professionals and law students were invited to participate in the survey, regardless of size and location. The survey aimed to determine to what extent lawyers and law students are now using Apple products, and whether there is clear evidence of an increasing trend of the legal industry “going Mac” in the future. For more information on the 2011 Clio Apple in Law Firms Survey or to receive the complete survey results, e-mail info@goclio.com.

“Blogging has become an important, even vital, source of information, education, entertainment and inspiration in the legal community. Whether written by practicing lawyers, law students, judges or law professors, blawgs are becoming more bold, more sophisticated and more integrated into the everyday experience of the profession,” said Allen Pusey, editor and publisher of the ABA Journal. “And choosing just 100 of the best from our directory of 3,500 legal blogs is becoming an increasingly daunting task.”

Small Firm Innovation was created in the wake of the financial crisis that forced many fresh law school graduates and seasoned lawyers to start solo and small law firms. Many found themselves unequipped to run a business.

“We started Small Firm Innovation in an effort to help lawyers fill the void between graduating law school and starting their own law firm,” said Gwynne Monahan, editor of Small Firm Innovation. “Our Contributors are incredibly helpful and generous in sharing their knowledge of creating and running a successful solo or small law firm. We’re honored to be included in the ABA Journal’s Blawg 100.”

Monthly themes centered around first person accounts of small firm success creates a dynamic exchange of ready-to-implement ideas.

Second Annual Apple in Law Offices Survey, co-sponsored by #MILOfest.

Vancouver, BC and Lake Buena Vista, FL – November 10, 2011 – Today at MILOfest 2011 in Florida, Clio launches its second annual Apple in Law Offices Survey. Cloud-based practice management system Clio welcomes MILOfest as a co-sponsor of this year’s survey, which aims to benchmark the degree to which Apple products have infiltrated the legal industry.

According to a recent Forrester Report, Apple products appear to be enjoying a larger adoption rate in the legal space as attorneys and legal staff are increasingly bringing their technology of choice to work. All legal professionals, law students and MILOfest attendees are invited to participate in the survey.

Available online at http://macsurvey.questionpro.com, the Clio Mac Survey will remain open through Wednesday, November 30th at 5pm EST, and the tabulated results will be presented by Clio CEO Jack Newton the following week of Monday, December 5th. Clio will also be giving away a free iPad 2 to a randomly selected survey respondent.

The Clio Apple in Law Offices Survey will gather data regarding the extent of lawyers’ current or intended migration to Macs or Apple products by focusing on the following areas:

Operating System Choice: Mac vs. Windows OS

Mobile device preferences: iPhone vs. Blackberry vs. Droid and others

Plans to purchase iPads and other Apple/Mac hardware and software in 2012

Cloud-based vs. desktop application usage in the law office

Clio CEO and Founder Jack Newton explains, “From our vantage point, we’ve seen the use of Macs, iPhone and iPads in law firms increase dramatically over the past year. Lawyers are using iPads and their accompanying legal apps more and more, so we’re excited to collect data charting this trend to see what’s really happening in the industry as a whole. We are extremely happy to welcome MILOfest as co-sponsor of the survey this year.”

MILOfest organizer Victor Medina says, “We are very pleased that Clio chose to launch its second annual Mac Survey at MILOfest this year, and are happy to be a co-sponsor of the survey as well. We are seeing a great expansion in attorneys bringing Mac products into the office and this study will provide research regarding the extent of this trend.”

The New York State Bar Association has entered an Affinity Partnership that allows its members to subscribe to Clio at discounted rates.

Albany, NY and Vancouver, BC – September 27, 2011 – The New York State Bar Association has entered an Affinity Partnership that allows its members to subscribe to Clio, a web-based practice management system designed especially for solo practitioners and smaller law firms, at discounted rates.

For smaller firms, the costs of purchasing software, upgrading it periodically and hiring technology support staff can be challenging. Clio allows smaller firms to access a highly secure, sophisticated practice management system for an affordable monthly fee. Upgrades to Clio are automatically applied for users when they log in. Product support is included in the subscription cost.

Using bank-grade 256-bit SSL encryption for security, Clio is Internet- or “cloud-based,” making it accessible on PC or Mac computers, smart phones and tablets. As a result, attorneys can easily update their calendars and tasks, manage cases and documents, track trust and operating accounts, record their hours, and prepare customized bills.

“Clio provides our members with a cutting-edge technology to help them manage their law practices. Emerging technology like this can help smaller firms adapt to a changing professional environment,” said State Bar Association President Vincent E. Doyle III of Buffalo (Connors & Vilardo, LLP). “We are pleased to offer such a practical benefit to our members.”

The State Bar’s Report of the Task Force on the Future of the Legal Profession, released in April, recognized that new legal technology offers both challenges and opportunities to solo practitioners and small firms. The report recommended that the State Bar assist smaller firms with technology-related issues. It suggested the State Bar might develop services that benefit practitioners for whom individual investment in technological solutions is not economically feasible.

Jack Newton, president of Clio, said, “We are proud to announce that the New York State Bar Association is participating in the Clio Bar Affinity Program. Bar associations across North America are realizing that cloud-based technology is becoming integral to their members’ success, not only as legal professionals, but as business owners.”

State Bar members are eligible for a 10 percent ongoing discount on Clio, making the system available for $44 a month per attorney and $22 a month for each support staff person. Members can try Clio for free for 30 days.

The New York State Bar Association has Affinity Partnerships with a number of corporations, allowing members to qualify for discounted rates for technology, health insurance, credit cards and research services. For information about Clio and other member benefits, see NYSBA Member Benefits.

The 77,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.

LCCA responds to proposals made by the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20 and the North Carolina State Bar.

Jul 19, 2011 – The Legal Cloud Computing Association (“LCCA”) has published its responses to proposals issued by the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20 (“Commission”) and the North Carolina State Bar (“NC State Bar”) regarding the use of cloud computing within a law practice.

The LCCA, formed in December 2010, is the collective voice of the leading cloud computing software providers for the legal profession, consisting of Clio (Themis Solutions, Inc.), DiaLawg, LLC, DirectLaw, Inc., NetDocuments, Nextpoint, Inc., RealPractice, Inc., Rocket Matter, LLC, and Total Attorneys, LLC.

Response to ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20

The LCCA’s letter to the ABA Commission on Ethics was issued in response to the Commission’sInitial Draft Proposals on “Technology and Confidentiality” published on May 2, 2011. The Proposals include certain modifications to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct that are designed to facilitate the responsible adoption of technology that will increase the quality, and reduce the cost, of legal services. The Proposals were issued as part of a process initiated in early 2010 where the Commission published an Issues Paper requesting comments and feedback from the legal community.

The LCCA fully supports the Commission’s Proposals, and thanks the Commission for incorporating feedback from the LCCA and others on the Issues Paper.

Response to North Carolina State Bar Proposed 2011FEO6

The LCCA’s letter to the NC State Bar pertains to Proposed Formal Ethics Opinion (“FEO”) 2011FEO6. The Proposed FEO attempts to address the ethical issues relating to the use of Software-as-a-Service or cloud computing within a law firm environment.

While the LCCA supports the NC State Bar’s efforts to provide clarity on the use of cloud computing to its members, the Proposed FEO as written would negatively impact a broad scope of attorneys from those who do nothing more than use a web-based email client or conduct online legal research to those that do full scale online delivery of legal services.

The onerous requirements of the Proposed FEO, detailed in full in the LCCA’s response to the NC State Bar, would force many cloud computing providers to withdraw from the NC market entirely, thus negatively impacting the technological capabilities and competitiveness of NC-based law firms.

The LCCA thanks both the ABA and the North Carolina State Bar for the opportunity to provide feedback on their respective proposals. It is the LCCA’s hope that a constructive dialog among stakeholders will facilitate the rapid adoption of cloud computing technology within the legal profession, consistent with the highest standards of professionalism and ethical compliance.

About the Legal Cloud Computing Association

Formed in 2010, The Legal Cloud Computing Association (“LCCA”) is the collective voice of the leading cloud computing software providers for the legal profession. The LCCA consists of Clio (Themis Solutions, Inc.), DiaLawg, LLC, DirectLaw, Inc., NetDocuments Inc., Nextpoint, Inc., RealPractice, Inc., Rocket Matter, LLC, and Total Attorneys, LLC.
As thought leaders in the arena of cloud-based practice management for solo and small firms and front–runners in educational outreach to law students, Clio’s founders proudly sponsor Small Firm Innovation as a marketplace of ideas for solo and small firms. The site will provide insight into the business side of running a law practice as well as the nuts-and-bolts of what it takes from the people who know these answers best: the lawyers themselves.

Jack Newton, President of Themis Solutions, Inc., remarked, “The needs of solo and small firm practitioners are often underserved in the greater marketplace. We think solos and small firms can learn a lot from others’ successes and missteps, and what pitfalls to avoid while simultaneously encouraging other solos and small firms to experiment with new ideas. We’re proud to foster this dynamic online community of thought and believe it will meet its purpose to support the growing solo/small firm sector.”
