New ILTA White Paper: Ethics and Security of Cloud Computing
The most recent collection of ILTA white papers includes a white paper written by Clio’s Jack Newton outlining some of the key considerations around cloud computing ethics and security, including:
- An overview of cloud computing
- The benefits of cloud computing
- Ethics issues relating to cloud computing
- A cloud computing security checklist
- A cloud computing privacy checklist
- A cloud computing data availability checklist
The white paper is embedded below, published on Clio’s JD Supra account, and available directly from ILTA.

Very nicely done. There seems to be a myth out there that if IT infrastructure is "in-house", a lawyer need not be concerned any further as to security issues and confidentiality. The sad reality is that, all too often (a) in big firms, the lawyer cedes all control to internal IT personnel, who may or may not be trustworthy or competent because lawyers or managers may not know which questions to ask, or (b) in small or solo firms, lawyers provide and maintain their own computer hardware (including potentially vulnerable local storage - let's not forget that, on average, hard drives fail after three and a half years) and have very limited competency or control over security. Somewhat paradoxically, a move to an "external" SaaS-based solution often means that lawyers are forced to ask the important questions, aided by papers such as this and the market-driven necessity for SaaS providers to obtain all the proper certifications and provide an appropriate level of comfort. Bravo to Clio for making things so much easier and secure for those who need to concentrate on law, not IT-related issues.
